In time for colder weather, stormier days, and dark moods, the National Gallery of Art has opened a fitting exhibition. The Darker Side of Light: Arts of Privacy 1850 – 1900 features prints, drawings, illustrated books and small sculpture by impressionists, symbolists, and realists of the late 19th century. Tomorrow at 12:10 pm hear the NGA Wind Quintet perform works by Debussy , Tafanel, and other related 19th century composers in the West Building Lecture Hall.
If you find a liking for the introspective arts, take a look at this collection of symbolist painters: "Odilon Redon, Gustave Moreau, and Rodolphe Bresdin" (709.44 N532) in the Art division of MLK. You may want to hear Debussy's symbolist opera Pelleas et Melisande (CD 782.1 D289P4), adapted from the play by Maurice Maeterlinck, which can be found with our collection of opera recordings.
